Ruby BBQ Food: An extremely unassuming place (there are tables but most customers order to go), Ruby BBQ Food is soul-warming comfort food. It's not bbq in the American sense, but the "bbq special" - pork with pineapple in a sweet-and-sour adjacent sauce is so good you'll eat more than you intended AND ask for an order to take home. Perfectly cooked vegetables, too. (South El Monte)
Pizza Cafe LA: The pizza wars are pretty hot in L.A. right now, don't you think? Pizza Cafe LA is experimenting with a couple varieties, a "Detroit deep dish" and "Brooklyn inspired with Neapolitan crust." They're both great, among the best in L.A. (Silver Lake)
Churros El Morita: There's an extremely popular Angel's Tijuana Tacos location in front of the Glassell Park Target, and about 40 yards north is a little churro and plantanos stall called Churros El Morita. The churros are made to order and absolutely perfect. (Glassell Park, various locations)
Nanuri Snack: Nanuri Snack is a cute little storefront with a menu pinned to the mall and limited and awkward parking. I love it. It offers a menu of Korean hits (changes a little most days) and some refrigerated products. The ramenbboki is a delight. Call ahead to order, as it's very much not fast food. (La Crescenta-Montrose)
Aunty Maile's: The shoyu chicken had me dancing in my chair with happiness, and then later the Hawaiian bento I took home had the same effect. This restaurant is packed at lunchtime with city workers, which makes it seems so legit, and the food more than backs that feeling up. (Torrance)

Editor's note: I consider myself a journalist, not an influencer, so I do not accept free food and I do not tell restaurants who I am.
