Making a Map

My work on turning How to Eat L.A. into everything I want it to be continues apace.

Hello all,

My work on turning How to Eat L.A. into everything I want it to be continues apace. It'll take a bit longer than I had hoped, so I'm pausing paid subscriptions for a few months. The new site and map will be up and running in 2025!

In the meantime, here are two articles, that I love for different reasons, about Los Angeles restaurants.

"Why were my people — the gays, the brown folks, and specifically the Pinoys — so drawn to this place? Why did it feel so spiritually near, given that it wasn’t created by us, or representative of “our” cultures? Who and what activated this accidental ambience of belonging?" Soup and Sympathy. By Karen Tongson.
"Until I get my bearings in this town, I’m happy to let that person be Ellis—at least when it comes to legendary restaurants that are so steeped in lore I never would have assumed natives unironically go there, but they are very real epitomes of past and present California culture." Bret Easton Ellis’s Guide to Classic Los Angeles Fine Dining. By Janet Mercel.

I also found this thread about restaurants that have recently closed to be interesting. There are definitely a lot of theories about the economics of restaurant viability floating around out there. Email me yours if you have some! I want to write an article about it and I'd love to get some inside scoops as well as some crackpot theories - you never know what will turn out to be correct.

In the meantime, happy eating, and we'll be back here soon!
