Eat Here: Very Old and Very New
See the map of all How to Eat L.A. picks here.
Viet Tapas: This new restaurant offers a lot of central Vietnamese dishes, which is a thoughtful departure from the southern Vietnamese food Californians are much more familiar with. (The spring rolls, however — they're an unusual shape but the taste is as classic as can be. I don't know where they originated. They're perfection.) Get the beef and watercress salad and one of the clay pots, and the glutinous corn for a treat. (Eagle Rock)
Tacos La Estrella: This truck might be the one that made me a real Angeleno (Elina Shatkin just wrote about this phenomenon this week). Though it is occasionally reported that Tacos La Estrella has closed, the truck on York is still making its small menu of perfect tacos and burritos. They're both smaller and more flavorful than you'd expect: nearly perfect in every way. I guess I'll always be a Seattle girl, though — the salsas are still too spicy for me.(Highland Park)
Sunset Grill: This place is a trip, and it has a little bit of Hollywood history to it: Don Henley wrote a song about the burger stand in the '80s. Ownership has changed and now the restaurant is on the second floor. It still serves burgers but, more interestingly, a Hungarian menu. So go to Sunset Boulevard and eat some goulash and have a tropical cocktail - the restaurant's other specialty. Everything here is unexpected, and it's beautiful. (West Hollywood)
