Khawaiian: Pretty straightforward (and nicely made) plate lunches here, along with tuna salad-topped inari, which is a comfort food I didn't know I craved, and which seemed strange but then I remembered seeing tuna salad sushi in Japan. Nothing's weird, there are just things we haven't seen before. (Koreatown)
Alchemist: Turkish food doesn't have a strong foothold in L.A. (by chance or by politics or by both, I don't know), so this is a fun little find. I really enjoyed my meat and potatoes with yogurt sauce (çökertme kebab), and the pastry selection is vast (Turkish/Near Eastern and otherwise) and homemade. (Carthay Circle/Beverly Grove)
Black Forest Bakery: A great thing about L.A. is that it's entirely feasible that the best bread in town is sold out of a little green camper van parked at a mechanic's. And only for a few hours a week. In addition to the loaves, try the donuts, which are pretty different from the L.A. classics: less sweet, and breadier. (Of course.) Also the goods here are entirely vegan. It's also noticeably expensive, but we should all be fighting to restore the correct financial order: cheap housing, pricy food. (Los Feliz)
Red Lion Tavern: Though this three-story bar is a classic, it's worth bringing back to your attention in case you're in need of a really big soft pretzel. I often am, and this is the best one in town. Say yes to the cheese sauce for an extra buck-fifty. (Silver Lake)
Chef G on 4th Thai Street Food: This restaurant is just a few months old and it is rocking and rolling. Panang curry and "tofu delight" with ground pork and vegetables are particular highlights, but the whole menu is good enough (as in excellent) to consider heading east of Thai Town. (Alhambra)
